HunyuanVideo is Tencent's open-weight video generation family. The current 1.5 release is an 8.3B-parameter diffusion transformer for text-to-video and image-to-video at 480p and 720p, with a separate super-resolution model that upscales to 1080p. Tencent has also released training and LoRA fine-tuning code. It targets developers and hobbyists who want to generate video locally on consumer hardware.

Best for
  • Relatively small 8.3B model; minimum 14GB GPU memory with offloading
  • Step-distilled 480p I2V model generates in about 75 seconds on a single RTX 4090 (per Tencent)
  • Training code, LoRA tuning scripts and Diffusers support are available
Watch out for
  • License excludes the EU, UK and South Korea, and companies with over 100M monthly active users need a separate license
  • Native generation is limited to 480p/720p; 1080p requires an extra super-resolution pass
  • Not an OSI open-source license; usage is bound by Tencent's acceptable use policy

Wan is a family of open-weight video generation models from Alibaba. The Wan2.2 release includes 14B mixture-of-experts text-to-video and image-to-video models, a compact 5B model that does both, a speech-to-video model, and Wan-Animate for character animation and replacement. It is aimed at developers, researchers and ComfyUI/Diffusers users who want to run or fine-tune video models themselves.

Best for
  • Permissive Apache 2.0 license, and the team claims no rights over generated content
  • Broad task coverage: T2V, I2V, speech-to-video and character animation/replacement
  • Integrated into Hugging Face Diffusers, with Hugging Face/ModelScope demo spaces
Watch out for
  • 14B models need a GPU with at least 80GB VRAM for single-GPU inference
  • 5B TI2V model needs at least 24GB VRAM (e.g. RTX 4090)
  • Open models output at most 720P (480P/720P)
